A Deep Dive into RDL’s Summer Season

rEvolution is driving the future of integrated sports marketing through the rEvolution Development League, a program that goes far beyond the typical intern experience. Founded in 2019, rEvolution’s Founder & CEO, John Rowady, has envisioned the program as a catalyst to inspire the next generation of sports marketers.

In early June, eight interns were handpicked from a competitive pool to participate in rEvolution’s10-week program. Representing six different schools nationwide, this summer’s program aims to prepare young sports marketers for what is next in their professional journey.

“We want this to be fun, not just your day to day as a student, but we want to involve you in the sports industry and what it’s all about,” says Micheal Begel, Co-Supervisor of rEv Development League. “We remember what it’s like to be in school, feeling uncertain of the future. This program aims to ease those worries and prepare you for the challenges ahead.”

Each intern is strategically placed into a team based on their experience, goals, and strengths, allowing them to dive into a specific area of the agency that aligns with their interests. These teams are designed to replicate the fully integrated nature of rEvolution. The teams for RDL’s Summer Season include experiential and hospitality, account management, client services, creative, and brand marketing. This approach provides interns with a comprehensive understanding of rEvolution’s operations and the collaborative efforts that drive our progress.

“This program at rEvolution has shown me what it’s like to work at a company that has its hands in every piece of the process,” said Julian Issar, Account Management Intern. “Unless you have an experience like this, you can’t see behind the red curtain and understand how the cogs that move the machine along work.”

A central element of the internship involves tackling real client projects. This summer, the interns partnered with First Tee Greater Chicago, a non-profit that leverages golf to impart essential life skills to children. The RDL team developed an integrated marketing plan for the partnership launch between The Evans at Canal Shores and First Tee, presenting it both company-wide and directly to the client.

“Building friendships with the other interns has been amazing.” said Lucy Quarles, Hospitality Intern. “Even though we’ve only known each other for a short time, the connections we’ve formed feel genuine. It’s great to have real relationships with peers in the industry.”

In addition to their daily responsibilities, interns experience a range of learning opportunities. Every Wednesday, a company executive hosts a “Lunch N Learn,” sharing insights into their role and offering career advice. These sessions are a cornerstone of the program, emphasizing rEvolution’s commitment to mentorship and growth.

“Being involved in internal meetings has been a cool aspect of the program, said Maddie Strey, Account Managment Intern. “Not only do I feel like everyone at rEvolution respects my ideas, but these internal meeting have also given me so many opportunities to learn more about the industry.”

“The rEvolution Development League is dedicated to developing young professionals’ skills and passions while continually striving to improve the industry we love.” said Brian Quarles, Chief Creative Officer at rEvolution. “This competitive program offers a glimpse into our vibrant culture and great work, equipping interns with the tools to excel in the sports business, whether at rEvolution or beyond.”

Ian Burleigh, Co-Supervisor of the RDL program, added, “The RDL program is all about giving interns real experience while helping them grow into future leaders in sports marketing. We’re not just looking to provide short-term skills — we’re focused on creating opportunities that really shape their careers.”

The rEvolution Development League aims to cultivate the future leaders of sports marketing. We maintain connections with our alumni, many of whom return to rEvolution as full-time employees. The program’s success is reflected in the number of former interns who continue to thrive within our ranks.
